Areas of flooring near doors that lead to the outside are most susceptible to dirt and moisture damage from footwear compared to areas such as bedroom floors; this is because by the time someone has walked through the house in their shoes, the shoes will have dried the further into the house they go. This is where mat wells are recommended to help prevent this. A mat well is where flooring is designed to allow for an entrance mat to be installed level in the flooring. This is typically found in commercial buildings but is also growing popular in homes. Having this incorporated into your flooring brings many benefits. This post will address our top 3 benefits of considering having a mat well installed into your flooring.

Inner Space Flooring

The first benefit of a mat well is that it is effective at reducing the amount of dirt and moisture brought into the building. As mentioned in our blog post What to do after a wood floor restoration, moisture can be very damaging to wood floors, especially if the flooring has a lacquered finish. The materials of mat well mats are usually more abrasive (e.g. PVC Backed Coir) compared to doormats that can be purchased. Due to this higher quality of material, they are more effective at getting the dirt and moisture off of the shoes, protecting the wooden flooring more.

The second benefit of installing a mat well is that it can reduce the cleaning and maintenance of wood flooring. These abrasive materials used for mat well mats means that maintenance costs are heavily reduced. Moisture and dirt particles can easily scratch and damage wooden floors, leading to having to pay for your floors to be continually restored. With having a mat well built into your flooring, there is less moisture and dirt being dragged across the floor. Furthermore, the grips on the bottom of doormats can scratch wooden floors even more as they can slip around on the floor. The slip of a doormat can also spread the moisture and dirt particles round onto the floor.

The final benefit we want to address is a safety benefit of choosing to have a mat well. As previously mentioned, door mats have a gripped material on the bottom. The aim of this material is to prevent it from slipping away from the door and allowing it to do its job of collecting moisture and dirt particles. However, these grips aren’t always effective, and the doormats have the potential to slip whilst someone is treading on this. Especially in a commercial setting, this is a serious issue to consider as this can lead to further trouble. Thus, choosing to have a mat well reduces the danger to visitors when they enter a building – whether that is a home or a commercial building.

To conclude, mat wells are a highly beneficial thing to incorporate into your wooden flooring when considering the maintenance of your floors as well as the safety of both you and visitors entering the building.
